"Dear Francy, I feel like I'm constantly going shopping, then going back and returning things a week later. I seriously hate doing this but I keep shopping because I always feel like I never have ANYTHING to wear. I hate my closet so much I'm thinking of getting rid of everything and starting from scratch. Do you have any tips on building a better wardrobe? "
If you're anything like me, you can probably empathize with this reader's dilemma. I use to have a very similar problem (and as a result still have items in my closet with price tags attached because I never wore them after purchasing). It sounds to me like the real issue is buyers remorse, a condition that although painfully annoying, is luckily preventable. Below are the three questions I try to ask myself before and while I'm shopping in order to prevent buying items I will later regret.
3 Questions to ask yourself:
#1. What am I looking for? This first question may seem simple and straight forward but you would be surprised how few people go out shopping with items already in mind. It's one thing to go shopping for an upcoming event or night on the town, however it is totally different to have a set item in mind. The more specific you are with what you want, the easier it will be for you to walk away from items that aren't quite what you want. It may be more difficult to shop but that's a good thing! It's much better to get items you will actually love and wear rather than impulse items.
#2. What are two items in my closet right now that will work with this? There's nothing worse then buying something awesome and having nothing to wear it with. Chances are, if you can't immediately think of something that will work with the item, your going to have a hard time working it into your wardrobe.
#3. Is this something I can't live without? Okay so of course there is no one item of clothing you can't live without but ask yourself if it is something you will have a hard time getting out of your mind if you don't purchase it. I like to think of it as "the haunting". If an item is truly amazing and I don't buy it I swear the item "haunts my mind for weeks". If you think passing up on an item will cause you to think about it for weeks to come, do yourself a favor and just buy the item. If it's something that is truly that amazing, you won't have any remorse!
